Aroostook County Jail will not see impact from sudden closure of correctional facility

HOULTON, Maine - The Aroostook County jail won't see any impact after the sudden closure of the Downeast Correctional Facility.

According to a union representative, workers at the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport received letters early Friday morning stating they were on paid administration leave until sometime in March.

“The downeast correctional facility is a state owned facility and will have no impact on Aroostook County what so ever," said Acting Deputy Sheriff Shawn Gillen. "We do feel horrible about the people who are out of a job this morning.”

Officials showed up at the jail around 12:30 a.m. and began loading inmates into buses. They are being taken to the Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston.
