Caribou, ME-- Don Collins, the father of Maine Sen. Susan Collins and a former mayor of a northern Maine city, has died at age 92.
Collins, a Republican like his daughter, was a longstanding figure in Maine politics. He spent five terms in the Maine House and Senate from the 1970s to the 1990s, and served as mayor of Caribou. Don Collins died on Saturday night.
Senator Angus King issued this statement:
"Mary and I are saddened by the passing of Don Collins. Don represented the best of Maine: a dedicated public servant, a pillar of the business community and a loving husband and father. His contributions, in the County and across our state, will not be forgotten, and our prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
Collins was born in Caribou in 1925, the second of four sons of Samuel and Elizabeth Collins. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration in 1949, he joined the family business as general manager and later succeeded his father as president of S.W. Collins.
