Eliot woman dies in fire

The State Fire Marshal's Office say a woman died in a house fire early this morning.

The fire was located in the woman's apartment on Hanscom Road in Eliot and was reported about 2:30 am. The apartment was located over a garage, next to a home.

Fire Investigators say the fire started in the garage and spread to the apartment on the second floor. The House also was badly damaged.

Investigators say that they believe the victim is 83 year old Beverly Webber. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting in making the positive identification. Webber owned the property and the body was found in her bedroom. Her son and grandson lived in the attached house and both escaped the fire.

57 year old Ralph Webber III attempted to rescue his mother but broke his hip when he was forced to jump to the ground from her bedroom window.

The apartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Fire investigators say the heavy damage to the building is making their investigation into the cause difficult.
