Gardiner Area High School student dies of injuries suffered in crash

School officials have confirmed that a Gardiner Area High School student has died of injuries she sustained in a crash yesterday morning in Pittston.

Maine State Police said 16 year old Tabytha Hembree was driving a Jeep that pulled into the path of a dump truck on Route 27.

Her 12-year-old brother Alex was a passenger in the Jeep and is expected to recover.

School officials said Tabytha was the goalie of the soccer team and very involved in the drama club. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the soccer field in Tabytha's honor and memory.

All athletic events for Friday evening are being rescheduled, school officials said.

Counselors are being made available to students and staff on Friday, and the high school will be open on Saturday with counselors and staff available.
