Man charged with attempted murder after destroying home in fire

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has charged a Corinth man with arson and attempted murder after his house was destroyed by fire early this morning.

65 year old Fred Roberts was arrested this afternoon and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

Fire investigators say he poured gasoline inside his house and lit the fire while his longtime female companion was upstairs.

70 year old Barbara King told investigators that she had just woken up when she saw the flash of the fire. She says she was unable to get down the stairs because of the flames.

Officials say King escaped the burning house by jumping out a second story window. Police say she suffered serious injuries.

The house on Hudson Road was flattened in the blaze.

The fire was reported at 6 a.m. and Roberts was located nearby walking along the road as firefighters were arriving at fire scene.
