Siblings seriously injured in Pittston crash

State Police say a young brother and sister were seriously injured this morning when their SUV collided with a small dump truck on Route 27 in Pittston.

The crash took place at the Intersection of Route 27 and the Old Cedar Grove Road after the Jeep pulled out in front of the truck.

Troopers said the Jeep Cherokee was driven by 16 year old Tabytha Hembree of Pittston. Her passenger was her 12 year old brother, Alexander Hembree.

Police said the truck collided with the driver’s side of the Jeep, and the Jeep then overturned and came to rest on its roof. The dump truck, which was towing a tractor, was operated by 55 year old Larry Merrifield of Winthrop.

The brother and sister had to be freed from the wreck by the Gardiner Fire Department and both were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with serious injuries.

Merrifield had minor injuries and did not require transport.

The crash took place about 6:45am as the brother and sister were headed to school. The road was reduced to one lane around the crash site during the morning hours, as a team of troopers investigated.
