The Maine Soccer Coaches Association honored the top High School soccer players in the State during a banquet in Bangor. Several County players were recognized including two who were named All New England. Kolleen Bouchard of Houlton and Madision Michaud of Presque Isle were two of nine girls named All New England. The full list can be found in the related links section. Both Bouchard and Michaud said they were surprised and honored to be recognized.
(Madison Michaud:"First they start by reading a little bio and they said 86 goals and I figured that was me .It was really exciting to hear that and it was a great surprise.
(Kolleen Bouchard):" I was really excited to hear that. My mom said she was watching me and right as they started to announce me I said whoa that is me. It is a great honor and I am thankful
Bouchard, a Senior, played just three full years of varsity soccer missing a year because of injuries. This year she helped lead the Shires to the gold ball.
Bouchard:" I was upset when I missed that year, but we won the State this year and a memorable career."
Michaud, a Junior, is also a member of the Wildcats basketball team. She says once basketball is over she then works on her soccer skills again.
Michaud:"I head down to Camden Rockport once a week and play games a couple of times a week."
Both girls agree that while they are getting the attention they couldn't do it without the help of their teammates.
Michaud:"I could not have been where I am today with my teammates from my freshman year to my junior year. I have been with them since I was little and I couldn't do anything without them."
Bouchard:"Without my teammates I would not be able to get all of these assists and with all my goals other people assisted on. It is an overall team achievement and also we won the State and that was a team achievement that helped me win this award."
Kolleen Bouchard was also named the Class C player of the Year. Several other players were named the Northern Maine State team that was announced at the banquet. Joining Michaud and Bouchard on the State team are Searra Herbert and Hope Shea of Caribou, Morgan Doughty of Ashland, and Hannah Nadeau of Madawaska
The boys team includes
Alex Ezzy of Caribou, Griffin Guerrette of Presque Isle, and Niko Naranja of Fort Kent.
Several other players from the County were named to the Maine Soccer Coaches Regional Team that we announced last month.
It's been quite a year for Houlton girls soccer coach Tim Tweedie.
His team picked up the State Soccer Championship last month and during a banquet yesterday he was named the Girls Coach of the Year. He is the State nominee for the Region 1 Small School Coach of the Year award. Tweedie led the Shires to the State Championship for the first time since 1987
Tim Tweedie:" It is always nice to be recognized by your peers. I have been lucky to be friends with a lot of good coaches throughout the State. To be voted on by my peers is a nice thing. It has been quite a month getting the gold ball and some of our players getting awards. We participated in the Christmas Parade so it has been a lot of fun with the banquets and those sorts of things."
Tweedie and other State winners will now be in the running for the New England Coach of the Year award. Tweedie led the Shires to a State Championship for the first time since the 1987..
