Houlton Boys relying on defense

The Houlton boys basketball team is looking to make the trip to Bangor this year. The Shires are off to a 9-3 start and are looking to move up the standings. Coach Tim Brewer and the players have been happy with the season so far and they are looking forward to the rest of the season.

<(Tim Brewer):" I am pretty happy so far. I think we have won games that we should. We lost to a good Presque Isle team and a good Mattanawcook team. I think we are coming along and playing better defense. We are starting to move the ball and play better defense. I think as the season progresses we will play better and better each game."

(Cameron Cleary):"I think this year we are in better shape conditioned a lot better."

(Nick Brewer):" I think we are more aggressive and bigger and stronger. We can rebound more and are more defensive minded."

The Shires dropped back to Class C after two years in Class B. This is Brewer's second year as head coach and he says the team is more familiar with his coaching style this year.

Brewer:" I think this year is a little easier because I had a year under my belt with these kids. I think they are starting to buy into what we are trying to do as far as help defense is what wins. We have been playing pretty solid defense and our scores reflect that."

The Shires lost two games to Presque Isle and one to Mattanawcook earlier this year and Cleary feels the team learned from each loss.

Cleary:"We have to play defense and rebound. We were getting crushed on the boards at the end of the game . We are getting out hustled.

The big key is a balanced attack.

Nick Brewer:"We work hard offensively and defensively and we move the ball pretty well. We have perimeter shooters and have Cam Cleary and I to clean it up."

Tim Brewer:"We have to use our inside game which is an advantage to us and we have to move the ball and shoot well. Defense and rebounding have to main staples."
