Maine Ski Hall of Fame inducting new class this weekend

NEWRY, Me (WAGM) - The Maine Skiing Hall of Fame will honor six new inductees on Saturday at Sunday River Grand Summit Hotel in Newry. Two people who have significant ties to the County will be honored.

Andy Shepard has been involved in skiing and outdoor recreation for all of his adult life. His major contribution was the Maine Winter Sports Center which revitalized Black Mountain in Rumford and Big Rock in Mars Hill and created the Biathlon Centers in Fort Kent and Presque Isle resulting in Maine hosting World Cup Championships in that sport.

Andy's son Walt Shepard will also be inducted into the shrine. As a member of the U.S. National Biathlon team Walt collected 32 medals in national and international competition and skied on three world championship teams. He spent a lot of time in the County training and competing.
