The gold balls have been handed out in High School basketball. The SAHS Warriors and Houlton Shiretowners both played for State Titles on Saturday.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors were looking to win their first State Championship since 1995 and Vinalhaven looking to defend the Class D title. SAHS took control of the game early and never looked back as they picked up the 54-37 win. Kacy Daggett had a double double and Kassidy Mathers, Kylie Vining and Sydney Brewer also ended in double figures as the Warriors bring home the gold ball
(Kacy Daggett):" Defensive pressure We needed to box out and keep them out of the post. We pushed the ball."
(Kassidy Mathers):" The second half it really came together. We got wicked pumped up. The crowd got into it and after we started scoring those buckets it all started to come together."
(Cliff Urquhart):" I think it was one of our better games we had played this year. Certainly from start to finish they got within two points there and I got a little nervous. We were able to take control our endurance really helped us."
The four time Regional Champion Houlton Shretowners took on defending Champion Monmouth in the Class C game. Monmouth jumped out ot a 6-0 lead and led by by 13 after one quarter. They maintained that lead until the Fourth quarter when the Shiretowners cut it to a two possession, but Monmouth held on for the 56-50 win Kolleen Bouchard led the Shires with a game high 35 points. Monmouth wins second straight state.
