(WAGM) - The Southern Aroostook Warriors softball team plays for the Class D Northern Regional title Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors are the top seed in Class D and will take on second ranked and undefeated PVHS at 3:00 in Brewer. The Warriors are still quite young with just three seniors on the team.
"We started to come together and play as a team. We are peaking at the right now. We just have to go out there and make our routine plays and maybe get some hits and relax. Don't let the pressure get to them and we will go from there," head coach Rob Betschner said.
This will be the fourth time that Betschner has coached a team that has advanced to the Championship game. By the way the last time the Warriors won a Regional Championship was back in 1997. They lost to Monmouth 9-8 in the state game that year.
The Fort Fairfield baseball team also is playing in a regional final. The Tigers improved to 16-0 on the season with a 5-0 win against Hodgdon on Saturday. Fort Fairfield faces the two seed Bangor Christian, a team the Tigers are familiar with in the playoffs. They've met up in the regional finals in soccer the past two seasons and they squared off in the quarterfinals in baseball last season.
"Yeah it's nice that we saw them last year, but likewise they saw us. They're a quality program, they do some small ball things offensively. They're going to put the ball in play and make you play clean defensively. They're a quality team. This was definitely the goal right from the first practice of the year. Guys came in motivated to get back to Mansfield. We lost down there by a run last year and guys weren't satisfied with that," said head coach John Ala.
The Tigers and Patriots will play Tuesday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor at 6:30. Fort Fairfield is trying to make it's first appearance in the state championship since 1994 when the Tigers stopped Buckfield.
