Comings and Goings

Rene and I were trying to think of all the people we have worked with at WAGM-TV over the years and the numbers are staggering.

Due to our size and rural locale we are considered a training station. Reporters come here for a year or two and then move on to other stations. In the past people have left for less money just to be in a bigger metropolitan area. There isn’t much we can do about the population of the region, what we can do is encourage local people to apply.

I like Aroostook County. The quality of the people can’t be matched. I lived in Augusta for nearly two years in the mid 90’s and the folks were less friendly and helpful than most you find in “The County.” This may be biased but I also respect the Aroostook work ethic. I picked potatoes as a youngsters. I think of that when my current job isn’t going as I would like. Guess what, this is still much better than picking potatoes.

Over the span of this month and next Jillian Mele, Mark Shanaberger and Katie Graham have or will be leaving the station. This leaves a big gap for a short time, but as always we will continue to do our best and eventually fill the positions.

If you like to write, have a curious mind and want to discuss a career as a reporter or anchor feel free to email me.

I’ll speak for many who’ve worked in the county and say my time there was fantastic. A great training ground filled with even better people. Keep up the good work.

Jon, I know what you’re talking about. I spent 40 years in the television industry. 30 of those years with NBC. When I started we really did say “Film at 11″. Videotape and the 2″ VTRs were just becoming available.
In my years I’ve met and become close friends with many of the well-known reporters, anchors and some of the most respected names behind the cameras as well.
Its good to see the “kids” go off on their own. Especially after you’ve trained them and then you see their faces on national news programs. Makes a person proud.
I’m retired and living in The County now and I enjoy watching your news programs.

Jon, I worked with you circa 1992-93. WAGM gave me my start in the TV business and it was just a great experience for me. Every year at this time I think about the Potato Picker’s Special and how much fun that was. I miss the people of Presque Isle but I don’t miss the winters! Anyway, WAGM has a fond place in my memory. Best to you all. Say hi to Cissy for me.
