Matthew Turnbull's "Livin' The Dream" Scholarship Beneit

Event Dates and Times

3/17/2017 - Starts: 6:00 PM
Caribou Inn & Convention Center
It is our honor to join with Common Crossing in hosting the Matthew Turnbull's "Livin' the Dream" Scholarship Benefit on March 17th, 2017 6:00pm-midnight at the Caribou Inn & Convention Center.…
Four years ago we lost our son Matthew as the result of a tragic automobile accident while on his way to work during the first snowfall of the season. Since then, we have established a scholarship fund, in his memory at Northern Maine Community College Foundation. NMCC was really where he found his niche, so to speak, earning an associate's degree, as well as two additional certifications, one of which included the distinction of “Outstanding Student of the Year” in the Metal Fabrication Program. As a student at NMCC, he served as a resident assistant and volunteered in helping faculty and students alike in his spare time. He truly loved the community college and was a frequent visitor even after graduation. Matthew was proud of his educational achievements and valued continued learning as a priority in his life. Matthew was a genuine "County farm boy" with a passion for agriculture and so he chose to remain employed locally at Lynox Welding, with a goal to one day be a full partner in the Turnbull Farms Dairy. He was perhaps best known to as "Nameless the Intern" on 101.9FM The Rock or nearby the stage with his fellow band members and brothers Common Crossing. Anyone who knew Matthew quickly recognized his energy, humor, and generous spirit. He was always wearing a smile, and when asked how he was doing, he would reply “I’m Livin’ the Dream” no matter the day or the circumstance, which became the inspiration behind the scholarship name.
Our mission is to grow an established endowment to (2) $1500 self-sustaining scholarships to be awarded to two students studying trades at NMCC, Presque Isle, Maine. To date, six (6) County students have been awarded "Livin' The Dream" scholarships, but our goal is to grow the annual scholarship awards into a full semester for two deserving students in our community who wish to study a trade at NMCC. Since becoming part of the NMCC Endowment Foundation, we have had the distinct privilege to meet and hear testimonies from local students and families who have benefited from these scholarships. The scholarship has helped us face difficult days by knowing that we are doing something that will continue to contribute to this community, as Matthew would have done himself.

With our Sincere Thanks,

Join us for an evening of Irish Music, Live & Silent Auction, Social and Dancing.

This pageant was developed in honor of Abby Ladner who passed away in a tragic car accident. Abby was a avid beauty queen who was always positive and loved to be involved in her community. Her family developed Abby's Angel Bags to be distributed to hospitals in Aroostook County that are filled with supplies for families that are in the hospital for long periods of time as Abby's family was. This pageant was created to make sure that Abby's family receives many supplies to fill these homemade bags for families. The Northeast Maine pageant is also a preliminary to the Maine Academic Scholarship Pageant which the newly crowned queens will win their way to. The age categories are from JR Princess through the MS/MRS division. No pageant experience needed.

Maine Arts Commission is bringing information, listening tour to Aroostook County

Event Dates and Times

2/21/2017 - Starts: 2:00 PM - Ends: 5:00 PM
Wintergreen Arts Center, 149 State Street, Presque Isle, Maine 04769
Wintergreen is final checkpoint on Maine Arts Iditarod. On Tuesday, February 21, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, the Maine Arts Commission will conclude its Maine Arts Iditarod, a statewide information and listening tour, with a community meeting at the Wintergreen Arts Center. This meeting is free and open to the public.

What is the Maine Arts Iditarod? The Maine Arts Commission launched a statewide information and listening tour on January 17 at the Portland Public Library. From York to Presque Isle, the commission is hosting seven regional meetings ending on February 21 at the Wintergreen Arts Center.

Each gathering includes sessions for artists, arts organizations, educators, policymakers and community developers. The tour coincides with the opening of the commission’s next cycle of grant applications and guidelines.

“An important part of the commission’s mission is to provide professional development and information to the field,” said Julie Richard, the commission’s executive director. “The Arts Iditarod gives us the opportunity to connect with our constituents in person, to hear what’s important to them and to engage them in discussions that are critical to the arts statewide and beyond.”

First Friday Art Walk

Event Dates and Times

2/3/2017 - Starts: 6:00 PM - Ends: 8:00 PM
Wintergreen Arts Center, 149 State Street, Presque Isle, Maine 04769
Wintergreen Arts Center is hosting the inspiring stained and fused glass work of Presque Isle native Kathleen Ledger Cassidy during the month of February. The opening reception, “Fragments: A woman’s journey into glass,” will be held on February 3, 2017, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, during the First Friday Downtown Art Walk.
Refreshments will be served and musical entertainment provided by the very talented Brian & Doug of Common Crossing. The evening event is free and open to the public.
Kathleen is a Maine native, born and raised in Presque Isle. She and her husband Don moved back to Presque Isle in 1990 to raise their two sons, Bennett and Brock.
Throughout her life, Kathleen searched for an outlet for her creative energy. When she took a stained glass class 10 year ago, she knew immediately she found her passion. She furthered her knowledge and skill at the Phoenix Studio in Portland, taking advanced classes.
“I create a wide variety of glass art: traditional stained glass window panels, suncatchers, tiles, garden stones, jewelry, and mosaics,” said Kathleen. “In an effort to continue to grow, I bought a kiln two years ago. I now enjoy creating fused glass jewelry, ornaments, and dishes. I also have fun incorporating ‘found’ objects: old bottles, shells, crystals, and the bottoms of special wine bottles into my glass designs.”

Through the Lens of a Farmer: Photography and Woodpile Art of Larry Park

Event Dates and Times

1/6/2017 - Starts: 6:00 PM - Ends: 8:00 PM
Wintergreen Arts Center, 149 State Street, Presque Isle, Maine
Wintergreen Arts Center is hosting a unique show based on the photography and wood-based art of renown retired farmer and Presque Isle native Larry Park. The opening reception, “Through the lens of a farmer,” is to be held on January 6, 2017, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, during the First Friday Downtown Art Walk. Refreshments will be served and the show is free and open to the public.
From photos he took as a youngster of 1940s-era Presque Isle to shots capturing the essence of his life in agriculture, Larry’s photography is complemented by his eye for what he fondly calls woodpile art. Tree burls, twisted trunks, and fungi are often viewed as the forest’s misfits, but Larry lovingly rubs and polishes them into an art form meant to warm the nature lover in everyone.
Larry also creates functional art from castoff wooden treasures. Some pieces are for sale and others only for viewing. The entire show will be hung and on display for the month of January.
