Cold temperatures Saturday did little to dampen the enthusiasm of hundreds who turned out for Brian's Ride, a fundraising event benefiting cancer patients, held at Northern Maine Brewing Company. Spectators enjoyed races throughout the day, featuring snowmobiles from the 1960s through the 1980s, with participants ranging in age from pre-teen to adults. Brian's Ride is named for Brian Caldwell, who died of cancer in 2014. Brian's Ride is a fund created to support cancer patients receiving treatment at Cary Medical Center. To date, the fund has raised more than $40,000, and assists patients and their families with medical-related expenses.
A building in Presque Isle that's been closed for about four and a half years will be opening again, possibly in May. The former Crow's Nest building will be opening back up as an event venue and an educational center for children six weeks old through school age. Jackie Hughes is partnering with the building's current owner Dana Cassidy to make this happen. She says it has been in the planning stages for about a year and that they hope to have it open by mid-May. Hughes says that when it opens it will have a new name, Hillpointe Crossing. She adds they'll have additional space for other businesses and office space for lease. She says they're currently in the building working to clean up vandalism that happened a year and a half ago, and they're also working with an engineer and a fire marshal to get the building ready. NewsSource 8 will be speaking with Hughes tomorrow, so we'll have more on this story later this week.
Today's cold temps and wind didn't stop students in Hodgdon from walking out of school for 17 minutes to recognize those who lost their lives in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
