Presque Isle Wildcats Hockey Team Practicing Again
Phase 2 of MPA's return to play guidelines have started; teams are now allowed to workout with coaches
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -
It's been 4 months since the end of the high school hockey season and finally, the Presque Isle Wildcats are back to slinging shots into nets.
(Carl Flynn): "It's well overdue and we're pretty excited about it."
These workouts mark the beginning of phase 2 of MPA's guidelines to safely allow student athletes to return to play this coming school year.
All coaches wore masks and encouraged students to be 6-feet apart.
(nat-sound): 6 feet, 6 feet.
Coach Flynn is pleased with the conditioning his players have done on their own. He's not surprised though. He says his guys are always staying in shape no matter what.
(CF): "The kids have worked hard...My hockey players quite honestly are good athletes and they stay in shape year-round so the conditioning for them is something they would've been doing whether this was going on or not."
This year's workout was pushed back 6 weeks because of COVID-19. While the workouts are important for conditioning, puck handling and mental skills...building team chemistry is what's most important for this team.
(CF): "Quite honestly, team chemistry is the biggest asset we're going to get from this. Maybe that and some physiological stuff to see where the kids are at.
(CC): "It's a big part of the game and if you guys don't have team chemistry you don't have anything."
Last season this team made it to the Regional Finals but lost to the Old Town Orono Black Bears at Alfond Arena. The team was undermanned because of illness but aren't making any excuses. The boys are just hungrier now.
(CF): "The boys are really hungry. We lost in the Northern Maine Final. Not to make excuses we lost fair and square but we had three kids that were sick with temperatures that night....We've got a good portion of the team back, not all of it missing a couple important cogs but we've got a lot of our guys back and we really hope we can play this hockey season because we're one of the two or three top teams in the league and have a chance to go all the way.
(Colby Carlisle): "We were really disappointed to lose in the finals. We really do want it this year. We want to come back stronger than ever. We lost a couple of good guys but we want to see if we can compete for the finals again this year."
