FORT KENT, Maine (WAGM) -

Motorists in Fort Kent with electric or hybrid vehicles now have access to a charging station.

Steve Pelletier, Economic and Community Development Director for the town, says installation took place at two locations: Northern Maine Medical Center and at the Town Office. Two units have been installed at each location.

“We have a separate meter in the basement to determine, you know, just the amount usage. Historically, when that type of vehicle charges up, there’s - there’s not supposed to be a lot of electricity needed. They will be directed to go to the police station where the key will be, and they’ll have access to it 24 hours a day, which was a requirement of the grant,” says Steve Pelletier.

The hospital charging stations will be used primarily by staff and visitors, while the units at the Town Office are more for the general public. Pelletier says because the stations are new and haven’t seen much use yet, town officials are still working out details to determine what, if any, charges might apply for users.
