Stuff the Bus Program Helps County Families in Need
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -
Meanwhile, The first day of school is approaching which means so is back to school shopping.
This year, more than 700 brand new backpacks will be given out to families in need to help prepare their kids for the first day of school. The backpacks are part of the Stuff the Bus program, a collaboration between United Way of Aroostook, Adopt-a-Block in Houlton and the Aroostook County Action Program. The backpacks are filled with all the necessities and are available for kids grade K-12.
”There’s a lot of families that struggle financially and back to school can be a really hard financial impact on a family. They’re trying to put food on the table, and they’re given a list of things they need to purchase for their child. And if their child goes to school, it’s emotionally devastating to not come prepared on your first day, so we want the children to be focused on their educational success and not be worried about if they have the supplies they need or not” says Sarah Ennis, United Aroostook Executive Director.
To see if your family qualifies for a backpack you can call ACAP at 764-3721 to fill out an application.
