Summer Trail Challenge 2020
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -
(JK): "This event is a great challenge for anybody. The beginner the intermediate the expert level. Whether you hike, walk or run this event is for you. This is a safe space. This is a great place. Trails. Outside. Lots of fun energy."
This year would’ve been the 15th annual Nordic Trail Festival.
Covid-19 didn't allow for the Festival to happen this year but never fear, there will be something taking it's place. It's called the Summer Trail Challenge.
(Karen Gonya): "So it's kind of a two fold effort with what we're doing. 1 is to get people who aren't familiar with the trails at Nordic be able to come out and give it a try and learn some new trails. And the other is to get those who are already out there using the trails to give them a reason to kind of be training and work toward a goal.."
The challenge kicks off this weekend and will go for the entire month of August.
(KG): It's kind of building up your stamina so week 1 is only a mile. Easy trail. Week 2 goes on to 2 miles, then 3 miles, then 4, then 5. The big event that wraps it all up is a 6-mile event."
Weeks 1 and 5 will be timed events for those who would like to keep track of speed.
Fans will only be allowed to attend those 2 events but they must first register on the competitorME website.
And if you do come to the event, Jonathan Kelley of CompetitorME says there is one item you're required to bring.
(JK): “If you’re coming, you have to have a face covering. We’ll have them available. This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about somebodies beliefs. This is if you want to come and be apart of this event we’re simply asking for yourself and your fellow athletes please wear a mask or a face covering.
