PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Businesses in Northern Maine are struggling due to the border closure.

Senator Susan Collins says she will continue to push American and Canadian officials to carefully reopen the border.

“I have been encouraging both American and Canadian officials to reopen the border in Northern Maine. The incident rate of COVID 19 is low on both sides of the border in New Brunswick as well as in Northern and Eastern Maine. And I believe we could safely reopen the borders so that families can cross. Right now, it’s closed to all but essential travel and that is creating some real hardships.”

Senator Collins says she is concerned about the Maine businesses that are used to Canadian customers coming to purchase goods from across the border. She says that Canadian business is vital for some smaller, family owned stores.
