PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Masks are not only mandatory at schools, but now daycares as well. Newssource 8′s Anna Soderberg has more on how a couple of Aroostook County childcare centers are adapting.

Face masks are now required for all childcare centers and in-home day cares; the masks are mandatory for both staff and children ages 5 & up. Jordyn Rossignol is the owner of Miss Jordyn’s Childcare and Preschool in Caribou. She says the most frustrating thing for the children is having to wear them outside.

Playing in the playground you have to wear masks unless you can maintain a physical distance of 6 feet, which if anyone has worked with children, especially young children that’s near impossible.

Jackie Stevens, the owner of Planet Recess in Presque Isle has decided on facial shields for her staff in hopes of making the children more comfortable around the providers. Stevens say, similar to Miss. Jordyn’s, that the children are having a difficult time adjusting.

Went ahead and purchased shields, I thought that was a little more conducive to working with children. So now they can actually see our smiles and our expressions, where with the mask they couldn’t before. So that has been a little helpful. Had a couple little ones who were afraid and crying so we thought the shields would do better.

Rossignol says she is part of a cohort of providers throughout the state that have worked together to draft a letter to try to get the new mandate changed.

There is a petition that started and we’re signing. And it’s not that we as providers don’t believe that masks work or that we want to go against the state. It’s just that in this scenario with childcare it doesn’t make sense for us. We’re not public school where we’re here 6 – 5 ½ hours a day. We’re here 10, 11 hours a day, that’s significantly longer for these young children to be wearing masks.

Both providers are complying with the new requirement put in place by the state; however, hope that adjustments will be made to the new mandate.
