Catholic Charities Maine Food Box Giveaway Update
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - About 25 thousand boxes of food have been handed out to people in need since early July.
The latest distribution was held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Houlton today. Over the last two months, Catholic Charities Maine has distributed the roughly 25,000 boxes of food in Aroostook, Washington and Northern Penobscot County through a USDA project.
Nearing the end of their first contract through the USDA, Dixie Shaw is hopeful that once the Maine Farmers Exchange is able to secure another contract, they will be able to continue the project.
“This came up quite suddenly, and we were able to be a part of it for July and August, and we’re hoping to be a part of it for September and October. From what I understand there will be another one in November and December. But again, we have not heard anything yet. But I don’t think that’s unusual because what we’re hearing, nobody has heard anything yet. So, we’re hoping to hear any minute any day… whether or not we’ve been awarded another contract.”
The final food box distribution for now will be at Caribou High School on Saturday at 10 am.
