Houlton Rotary hosting e-waste recycling event September 12th
HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) -
Saturday marks Houlton Rotary’s 5th annual e-waste event, which will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Military Street.
There’s no charge to anyone dropping off unwanted electronic items, like televisions, printers, and monitors, but donations are welcome. Houlton Rotarian Malcolm Randolph says any money raised will benefit the Houlton Rotary Club, and Aid for Kids.
“What this event does is it provides a free recycling service to the town of Houlton and surrounding communities - a place where people can come and drop off their e-waste and have it recycled for free,” says Houlton Rotarian Malcolm Randolph.
“The large TV’s that he’s talking about, we still get those. We get a dozen of ‘em every year. So they’re just comin’ out of the garages and the basements and whatnot,” says Houlton Rotarian Nancy West.
Since its beginning, the program has collected over 300,000 pounds of electronic waste. Randolph says while e-waste only represents 2 percent of waste in a landfill, it makes up 70 % of the toxic waste in a landfill. Saturday’s event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
