Fort Kent, Maine (WAGM) -

The sport of Disc golf has been increasing in popularity nationwide. This weekend, folks up north in St. John Valley will be able to say it’s in their area too. Here’s Daveson Perez with the story.

<A project which began as an idea in twenty-18 has finally come to fruition just 2 years later. An 18-hole disc golf course has made it to the St. John Valley.

(BP): “We went to work last summer. We got 9 holes in by fall and this summer we got the other 9-holes by the end of june.”

The courses home will be at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center. The idea for disc golf came to the Center via Director of Outdoor Recreation at Pineland Farms Matt Sabasteanski.

(Matt Sabasteanski): “We though additional programming for outdoor centers around the state this is a great add. So the clubs came down and visited pineland. They did some of the activities we offer there. This was something they liked and so we said let’s try to make it happen. Our designer at Pineland came to Fort Kent and to Presque Isle to design a few courses here and at Nordic Heritage Center. These guys have been working hard to make it happen every since and this is the end product of their efforts.”

The disc cages have been strategically placed along the ski trails. Don’t worry winter athletes, the cages won’t get in the way of the shred.

(Carl Theriault): “Not at all, everything is to the side of the trail so it should mesh out really well with our winter activities.”

F-K-O-C will have Discs both for rent and for sale. There will be course maps and scorecards to make it easy for those who are unfamiliar with the game.

Theriault and Paradis have put in a lot of work to bring this exciting new activity to the Valley in just 2 short years... but as is the case with most projects the volunteers are the backbone.

(CT): "You know like most things in Fort Kent the good things are done by volunteers and that’s absolutely true here at Fort Kent Outdoor Center...You know you show up here on a Wednesday afternoon and you hear a bunch of guys out there with chainsaws and we’d be hauling the wood out of the woods and people were making up signs on computers at home...I’m very proud of that concept and that’s what makes this community so special.

(Ben Paradis): I am extremely pleased. It’s one of the nicest golf courses. I’ve been visiting a few of them and I think ours is really up to par with some of the others.

The Opening Day for this course will be this Saturday, September 12th from 1-4 pm. You’ll be able to play for free and registered guests will be entered to win a prize.
