Houlton Parks and Recreation Department to Hold After-School Program
HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) - With the Houlton School Department ending the school day early, the Houlton Parks and Rec Department will be holding an after-school program for students starting tomorrow. News Source 8′s Cam Smith has more on the program.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Houlton schools are ending their school day at 1:30. Seeing a need to help parents with this early release, the Houlton Parks and Rec Department decided to step in.
“We try to do a little after school program for the kids. Currently the one that we’re holding right now is on Wednesdays for kids grades K-6.”
Marie Carmichael, Recreation Program Director for the Houlton Parks and Rec Department, says that the program will be held mostly outdoors.
“All of our activities we’ve planned right now, we’ll let the kids get here, get them fed with a snack type thing, and then we’ll head out to Community Park where we now have a new 9 hole disc golf course so we’re going to play that. We’re going to take them to play tennis and basketball and use the playground.”
While utilizing outdoor facilities, Carmichael says they will still observe the COVID-19 guidelines.
“Both staff and kids when we can’t stay six feet apart, we’ll have our masks. We’ll also be bringing our portable hand sanitizers with us. So, we’re trying to keep them as safe as possible while we’re doing the activities.”
Carmichael adds that the program will help fill a void for parents who have other responsibilities during the 1:30 to 5 time frame. With 12 kids already registered, Carmichael hopes to expand the program and encourages parents to call the Rec Department if they are interested. Cam Smith News Source 8.
