PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - The Presque Isle Army Airfield was originally dedicated on September 15th, 1941. According to Kim Smith of the Presque Isle Historical society, it had a big impact on the defense of our nation.

When the U.S. government began to consider taking part in world war 2, they used eminent domain to claim the airport as a strategic point for an airbase.

“In the fall of 1940, they brought in contractors and built 60 buildings in 60 days to establish our base. For the first 7 years, 1940 to 1947, it was the Army Airfield.”

In 1947 the Army Airfield was changed to the Army Airbase. During that time it was also a base hospital and famous celebrities of the time came to show support for the troops.
