Man arrested for 1984 murder of woman in Waldo County
BELFAST, Maine (WABI) - A Stockton Springs man charge with the murder of a woman from Stockton Springs more than 35 years ago pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a Belfast courtroom.
57-year-old Kirt Damon, Sr. of Stockton Springs is accused of killing 63-year-old Dorothea Burke. He was recently indicted by a Waldo County grand jury.
Damon was 20 when Burke died.
Burke’s family was notified about Damon’s arrest Wednesday.
Authorities say she was beaten to death but haven’t released any more information. They also didn’t reveal what lead them to Damon more than three decades later.
Burke was last seen on June 23, 1984 at a bar in Bucksport. State Police say she’d attended a family wedding and was preparing to celebrate her birthday.
She was reported missing the next day after she failed to return home.
Her body was found five days later by construction workers on Meadow Road in Stockton Springs.
Burke was well known in Stockton Springs and had retired from a Sardine Plant in Belfast.
No bail was set for Damon Wednesday.
He’s due back in court next week.
