PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - At one point the city of Presque Isle had 22 one room school houses.

The classes would range from kindergarten to eighth grade.

“These school houses lasted in our area actually serving the students until 1949 when all of them were closed.”

Kim Smith, Secretary Treasurer Presque Isle Historical Society

One room school houses began to close nationwide after World War 2 as more people moved from rural areas to urban areas. There are two one room school houses still standing in Presque Isle, the James School and the Maysville Museum.
