Services Available to Help Prepare Your Home for Winter
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Assessing your home before winter rolls around is vital to keeping you warm and stable during colder months.
The temperature change can be a challenge for many. If your home isn’t properly winterized it could be more expensive. When it comes to home repairs, there are programs available to help residents prepare for the winter months.
“The weatherization program is basically designed to help HEAP recipients save energy in their home. We implement that program throughout Aroostook County. We have one ACAP crew based here in Presque Isle and the we have two contractors that work for us. One based in the Houlton area and one based in Fort Kent. We normally do about 5 homes a month, about 60 houses a year.”
The weatherization team at ACAP helps with home repairs like air sealing, insulation, and other areas to stabilize your home ahead of the winter. Randy Rattray says it could save you money over time.
“Nationally, the weatherization program saves homeowners somewhere around 300 a year in heating cost. That may not sound like much for a year. But if you add that over the lifetime of the products that are installed, it’s a pretty good chunk of change after a while.”
Shannon Hill, a housing specialist at ACAP says it’s important to reach out.
“If you’re in need of something, a repair… a necessary repair to your home its important to reach out to us. There are other agencies in the county as well that will assist with projects like that. So making that first call is really that first step in getting your home in tip top shape for the winter.”
