OAKFIELD, Maine (WAGM) - Katahdin Forest Products is ramping up production again, after a September fire destroyed one of the company’s largest sawmills.

Back in September, the Oakfield company was hit with a major setback after losing one of their sawmills in a fire.  Since then CEO, Dave Gordon has purchased a new mill for Katahdin Forest Products to help increase production.

“By happenstance, just very fortunate that this cedar mill in Chester, owned by Walpole Woodworkers was up for sale. The people were still there manufacturing every day. It was just extremely fortunate for us because it would have been devastating had we not been able to pick up the production immediately.”

Gordon says the new mill will help his company fill their orders.

“With this mill especially after the next few months because we are doing some tweaks down there, doing some upgrading and things like that, it will produce a tremendous amount of lumber for us to hopefully fulfill all of our orders.”

While many have lost jobs due to the pandemic, Gordon adds this acquisition will not only benefit the company but could also create more opportunity for those looking for work in this industry.

“The employment thing is tough right now. But we are expecting to hire some more on also. We feel very fortunate about that and it will help the area because we’ll be able to buy more cedar too. So, from the landowner’s point of view, it will help them also. So, it should be a win win all the way around for all of us.”

Gordon also adds this expansion will allow KFP to have cedar coming in from two different areas.
