PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Two County soccer players picked up major awards from the Maine Soccer Coaches Association. Ethen Holdsworth of Caribou and Gabrielle Martin of Fort Kent were named to the All Region team that includes all of New England. The two seniors were also honored as Players of the Year in their respective classes.

Gabrielle Martin:” I’m proud of myself for attaining those goals that I looked forward to since freshman year. I am just really grateful that I have the opportunity play this year compared to other schools that weren’t able to. I am just thankful for all the people who helped get me here.”

Ethan Holdsworth:” I am truly grateful. My basketball coach that I have he was on that in High School and the last three years Caribou has put someone on that team. Alex Ezzy and then Parker Deprey and now myself. There’s probably that I don’t know about. I am truly grateful to be on that list now.”

Both players had a lot of success throughout High School. Both put up big numbers during their senior year in a limited number of games. Martin’s Warriors won two straight Regional Championships during her sophomore and junior years and one State. Holdsworth’s Vikings won the Regional title once. He set a new school scoring record during his junior year.

Martin:” Very proud of each and every one of my teammates. The 11 that start, but the players on the bench also contribute. We all practice together. It was a team effort throughout all of the years.”

Holdsworth:” It’s truly been a great four years. I couldn’t ask for anymore. Freshman year got right into the system and made varsity. Sophomore year got taken under the wing of Alex Ezzy he really helped me. Junior and Senior year I am truly grateful I have had great coaches those years.”

Martin and Holdsworth both had several classmates on the team and they played soccer together throughout their careers. Martin said she was happy to just have a season.

Martin:”The worst part about it was having no fans. I would say that was the worst part about it. It is what it is and I am super glad to have had a season.”

Holdsworth now has his sights set on what he hopes will be a basketball season.

Holdsworth:” I am keeping my fingers crossed that we get to play. I think everybody is around here. It is going to be a hard winter without Aroostook County basketball up here.”
