LifeFlight of Maine have added 2 new aircraft’s to their fleet which will provide faster care to critically ill patients.
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Critically ills patients in Aroostook County will be able to get to specialized care facilities much quicker thanks to two new LifeFlight helicopters. Adriana Sanchez has the story.
LifeFlight is critical to the Aroostook county when it comes to saving lives. It can transport critically ill people from the county to Bangor and all the way to Boston for life-saving treatment. MMG Insurance company committed $25,000 to LifeFlight’s fundraising campaign to replace their aging helicopter fleet . Over the last two years, LifeFlight, with the help of MMG and other donors, was able to add two new aircraft to their fleet.
“This is a great advancement for the county and the challenges we have being so remote, it nice to have some security here and some ability for safety,” said Larry Shaw CEO of MMG Insurance.
“This state is so rural that these advancement are really life saving for some of these patients because some of the hospitals in rural Maine don’t have the equipment we carry on the helicopter so we can bring that to them and use it while were giving to a larger medical center where they can get definite care,” said RN Flight Nurse, Denise Saucier.
New aircraft means new advancements such as the time it takes to get to Bangor, cutting 10 minutes off the trip and more weight capacity, but it also means the ability to participate in new projects.
“The most importance piece right now is the high performance navigation system that’s next gen, as the FAA moves to next gen, we’re doing a national project with the FAA in low level instrument routes so the first in the country system, were building it Senator Collins was the lead person in making sure that happened with the FAA- without this air craft we can’t participate in a project like that,” said Thomas Judge, Executive Director of LifeFlight of Maine.
Over the past three years LifeFlight has transported over 600 patients from Aroostook County to facilities that provide specialized care.
