Wardens recover bodies of 2 men who drowned in Messalonskee Lake
KENNEBEC COUNTY, Maine (WMTW) - Maine game wardens have recovered the bodies of two young men who drowned in Messalonskee Lake on Monday.
A spokesman from the Maine Warden Service said the body of one of the men was found around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in 35 feet of water. The other man’s body was found about 200 feet away a short time later, wardens said.
Wardens said Brandon Breton, 21, of Vassalboro and Joseph Mayo, 19, of Rome were swimming with two other friends off a pontoon boat at the southern end of the lake near Greeley Island Monday afternoon.
A strong gust of wind pushed the pontoon boat away from the swimmers, and two of the men were able to swim to the drifting boat, but Breton and Mayo went under and never resurfaced, officials said.
Officials said even though air temperatures were in the 90s, the water temperature was still relatively cool at around 70 degrees.
