VP Vance cancels trip as Israeli strikes threaten peace negotiations
Vice President JD Vance postpones Switzerland trip as violence between Israel and Hezbollah escalates.
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Vice President JD Vance canceled his trip to Switzerland at the last minute Thursday night, postponing a new round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran slated to start Friday.
There wasn’t a lot of explanation given for the abrupt cancellation, but it appears renewed violence between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah is to blame. This puts the newly signed peace deal in flux.
Vance was slated to fly overnight Thursday to Switzerland to begin those technical talks with Iranian officials, but new Israeli strikes derailed those plans — the Lebanese government says Israeli bombs killed at least 47 people, making this the second deadliest day of the conflict so far.
Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a new ceasefire Friday, but the situation is still fluid. Iranian officials insist Israeli strikes must stop and Israeli troops must leave Lebanon before peace talks can take place.
Israel and Hezbollah are not parties to the U.S. and Iran’s memorandum of understanding.
President Donald Trump weighed in Friday with a post on Truth Social: “We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did. They are FINISHED! We’ll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!”
Later, Trump said in an interview with NBC News he spoke with Israeli officials and encouraged them to agree to a ceasefire. He did not say whether he spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
