Houlton gears up for Halloween events as holiday falls on a Saturday
Chamber of commerce director says town has become a Halloween destination
HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) - Halloween is a little over a week away, and the town of Houlton is preparing for a full day of events.
According to Jane Torres, executive director of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, Houlton has become a popular Halloween destination, especially with the holiday falling on a Saturday this year.
“It’s almost like we’ve become the place to be for Halloween,” Torres said. “You know, we have the early visitors who can bring the little kids and then they can go home and then we have something for the older kids and even the adults. We have a family category for the costume thing and sometimes we had one last year that they came as the Adams Family.”
Schedule of events
Several events are planned throughout the day, beginning with the Monster Dash 5K at 11 a.m. at Market Square.
Other events include:
- Spooktacular, noon to 2 p.m.
- A free movie at 1 p.m.
- Carnival games, 2 to 3 p.m.
- A haunted house, noon to 5 p.m.
- Downtown All Shires Eve Truck or Treat and Halloween Celebration, 3 to 8 p.m.
Trick-or-treating
Torres said many people still go out for trick-or-treating following the organized events.
“Everybody just seems to spread out and go to all the streets around Houlton,” Torres said. “Park Street’s a big one, there is usually a traffic jam on Park Street because it’s just traditional that everyone goes there, but there’s a lot of candy given out that day. Spooktacular alone we are expecting 1,200 kids.”
