PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Sen. Susan Collins, a personal friend of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is calling on him to clarify his communications with the Russian ambassador.

She's also joining a growing chorus of Republicans in saying he should recuse himself from an investigation. Sessions said he'd recuse himself "when it's appropriate."

Some Democrats are calling for Sessions to resign following the revelation he talked twice with Russia's ambassador during the presidential campaign. The conversations seem to contradict sworn statements Sessions gave to Congress during his confirmation hearings.

Collins and Sessions go way back. They entered the Senate at the same time and became friends. Collins introduced him to the Senate Judiciary Committee before he was confirmed.
