Driver issued summons after two-vehicle crash in Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Maine - Corporal Dennis Quint and Trooper Ryan Kilcollins responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 1 in Bridgewater. James Turner was driving north in a 2002 Ford pickup and was towing a trailer hauling another pickup. James was coming down a hill on US Highway 1, Bridgewater when the trailer lost traction and began to slide. James tried to correct the trailer but it went to the left into oncoming traffic. Holden Soucier was driving a 2014 Freightliner tractor trailer south when James’ trailer struck the front left of his truck.

The impact caused James to lose control of the truck and sent him off the right side of the roadway. The truck rolled over, struck a utility pole, and came to rest on the passenger side. The impact to the pole caused it to break ripping the wires from a nearby home. Holden’s tractor trailer had the front left tire broken away from the truck causing him to cross into the north bound lane and go off into the ditch. No one was injured in the crash. The truck James was driving appears to be a total loss. The trailer suffered significant damage as well as the truck that was loaded onto the trailer. The tractor trailer Holden was driving had significant damage to the front left side but his loaded trailer appeared intact.

US Highway 1 was completely shut down until Emera could arrive and disconnect the live power lines that were laying in the roadway. Consolidated Communications also came to the scene to erect a new pole and crews re-established power to the residence.

The Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (Trooper Robert Flynn) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. It was determined the trailer James was towing did not have brakes as required.

James was issued a summons for operating with inadequate brakes and for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

Brewer’s Towing from Mars Hill responded to remove both vehicles. Beaulieu’s Towing from Caribou was stuck in stopped traffic and assisted Brewer’s with removing the truck.

The Bridgewater Fire Department and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office responded and assisted Troopers with traffic control.
