Judge: Man found not criminally responsible for father's murder allowed to leave psych hospital

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - A man who killed his father in 2014 and left the chopped up body in the woods can now leave Riverview Psychiatric Facility for short trips - with supervision.

In September, 28 year old Leroy Smith III was found not criminally responsible for the murder of his father, 56-year-old Leroy Smith II.

Smith was admitted to Riverview days after his father's death.

The Kennebec Journal is reporting he has permission to leave for up to three hours at a time with supervision by hospital staff.

The judge's order limits smith to a five-mile radius of the hospital.
