- State Police say the man who shot himself with a flare gun Tuesday in Freeport is 65 year old Daniel Abbott of Portland.

The incident took place inside a pickup truck alongside Interstate 295 in Freeport, near the Brunswick town line. Two motorists stopped and helped Abbott, as a small fire broke out in his car. Jayson Forgues used his fire extinguisher to put the fire out in the cab and Paul Oleston helped pull Abbott to safety. The pickup had been modified to run on propane and troopers say if the fire had got out of control, the propane tank in the truck’s bed likely would have exploded.

Abbott is being treated at Maine Medical Center for burns and injuries to his head. He case is being investigated as an attempted suicide.
