The County's only marathon is just three and a half weeks away. Organizers of the event held a press conference today to talk about the event to thank sponsors and to unveil the Marathon sign at the Caribou Wellness center. The Organizers are happy with the number of entrants for the various races
(Christina Kane-Gibson):" We are really happy. We are ahead of last year. If the trend continues we will be over 400 so we are excited about that. A lot of repeat runners a lot of new runners(Caribou) and a lot of kids."
(Chris Bernier):" Across the United States numbers are down for a myriad of reasons, but our numbers are up. The whole community support and the beauty of the course the word is spreading."
The press event brought together the multiple sponsors for the two day event. This year the kids race has been moved to Saturday September 15th and the Marathon and half marathon will be held on Sunday the 16th.
Gibson:" We always do a survey at the end of every year. After last year overwhelmingly parents wanted to see their kids run. A lot of them are running the race on Sunday so we decided to move it to Saturday."
The marathon course is also different this year thanks in part to Mother Nature
Bernier:" Because River Road decided to be part of the river this year we had to re route it. Instead of taking a left onto River Road we are going to take a right onto East Presque Isle Road. It is a beautiful out and back that is Caribou blueberry fields and potato fields. Nice rolling hills so it won't be perfectly flat but will be better for the runners to get a little up and down out there."
Bernier says the course has been certified again this year for anyone wanting the use the marathon as a qualifier for Boston.
Bernier:" USATF especially for marathons that are Boston qualifiers are very particular. They go through every single number and for 26 miles that is a lot of numbers especially when we have a turn around point that can be moved one way or another. They went through it with a fine tooted comb and we got our seal of approval."
