The Easton boys basketball team has several new faces this year including a new coach. Cody Closson took over the program from Manny Martinez who coached the team for two years. This is Closson's first varsity coaching job. He says he knows the history and legacy of Easton basketball
(Cody Closson):"It's a great honor to be a part of the history at Easton High School. The success over the years. It is fun to be a part of. This is a great group of guys who are working hard and I am happy to be here.
The Bears lost six players to graduation off last year team including their leading scorer Jake Flewelling. While this could be a learning experience for the young players and first year varsity coach things have fallen into place and they are off to a good start.
Closson:"This is my first varsity gig but them being a young team and me being a young coach it's not like they have to relearn the system. That is a good benefit to having a young group. I am going to have five freshman on the team.
Noah Hanscomb is one of the seniors on the team. He was a member of the team that lost in the State game two years ago. He says that stepping into a leadership position on the team is different
(Noah Hanscomb):" It is a different experience from last year because they were always here for us and now we are the leaders and will learn from what they taught us.
Senion Collin Sotomayor is another veteran on the team. He says that a loss to Hodgdon earlier this year could be a great learning experience for the squad
(Collin Sotomayor):"We just weren't used to the pressure, but it will help us get better and better and by playoff time I think we will be ready."
The Bears head into the new year with a better than 500 record. Closson says the key to success will be team balance and chemistry
Closson:"It really could be anybody on any night. We don't have a real leading scorer it is who is going to step up the plate and lead it tonight.
Hamscomb:"We have to be really intense with the defense we run. The offense gets everyone involved it is more a team sport not an individual.
