The Houlton Shiretowners are back in the State Cheering Championship again. The team is much more inexperienced this year and the Shires were able to improve all year long and qualify for the States this weekend.
< (Renae Foley):" We are excited we graduated 8 seniors last year. We have nine freshmen on our squad this year. They have really stepped up and filled in and have done a really good job. We are just really pleased with how they have progressed during the year."
The Shietowners have just three seniors on the team. They have had a successful season finishing second in the County's and fourth in both the PVC an Regional qualifier.
Foley:"We have some great tumblers this year and that has added to our score sheet. The kids have been nice and solid with their motion technique. We have a great dance. We are just really pleased with everything the kids have offered."
The team has been working very hard over the last couple of weeks and have changed part of their routine
(Lexi Miller):"We have changed our whole pyramid last week. We are working on that and we have some people out from practice lately so that makes it extremely hard. I think working all together and staying calm and focused will help us."
The Seniors will give the younger team members the same advice they have given them all season.
(Claire Gilpatrick):" We have to keep them focused because they aren't used to cheering on varsity, I think the three seniors have really been trying to do that all season."
(Delaney Despres):"We have pretty much told the freshmen to focus and keep their head in the game. I think a lot of them are nervous and just to keep them motivated to do their best."
The seniors say that being on the mats for the final time in a competition will be bitter sweet.
Gilpatrick:"I am excited to close this chapter, but I am going to miss cheering."
