Houlton golf team looking for success

The golf season begins later this week. Three teams are competing in the Aroostook League Class C. CAHS, Ashland and Hodgdon will field teams and will have their state qualifier at Portage Hills in mid September.
The Houlton Shiretowners and Carlilse cooperative team with players from Presque Isle and Caribou will compete in the PVC. Carlisle will attempt to qualify for the State tournament at the Kennebec Valley Conference Class A qualifier in early October. Houlton will attempt to qualify for the States at the PVC Championships at JATO in late September.
The Shiretowners golf team finished second in the State Class C golf tournament last year. The Shires lost just one scorer from last year and they are looking forward to another strong showing this season.Coach Dave Grant says consistency will be the key to success.
Dave Grant:" To be consistent. Wyatt can go low 37 or 38, but the rest are 40 or 43 and that is what it takes."

Wyatt Harvey and Nick Brewer are the two senior captains. Both say they have played a lot golf over the summer

(Wyatt Harvey):"I play everyday and when I don't I try to play 18 or 27 one day."

(Nick Brewer):" Wyatt and I play a lot of golf together. We play in tournaments and just play for fun too."

Grant:" Most of these kids are out here everyday."

The Shiretowners finished second to Mattanawcook in both the PVC Class C Championship and in the Class C State Championship events. Grant says the team has a tough regular season schedule

Grant:" I think the North Division is tough. I think we play Mattanawcook Academy, Greenville, Dexter PVHS it is going to be very good."

He said the goal this year is the same as most years.

Grant:" We would like to win the PVC I think that is the number one goal to win our division and then play in the PVC Championship I think we can do that. I think it would be a good step for these kids."

Wyatt Harvey finished 10th in the State Championship last year and he hopes to improve on that this year.

Harvey:"We have a good strong three and our back four and five are pretty good too."

Nick Brewer says the team will head into the season very focused looking to get the ultimate prize a championship

Grant:" The goal is to get to the State."

Harvey:" For the team I would hope we would win or be second, but I really want to win this year."

Brewer:" We carry like a vengeance because we are always second place. So this year we are trying to get to the States and go first place this year."
