The Katahdin girls basketball team would love to make another trip to Bangor. The team lost a couple of experience players from last year's team ,but coach Jona Fitzpatrick is hopeful the team will have the same work ethic as previous Cougar teams
(Jona Fitzpatrick):" We have just worked really hard to steadily improve every year. When I first started we weren't winning many games, but we gradually improved and started winning more games with stressing defense.I feel we can always play better defense and my goal is to get them to play a better man to man defense."
Three seniors on the team will be relied on for leadership and they are all looking forward to a fourth consecutive run to the quarterfinals and a trip to the Cross Insurance Center
(Madison Landry):" Pretty excited hoping to get back to Bangor and make it further than last time."
( Hannah Kyllonen):" I think we will do pretty good we are all pretty fast and we just need to play defense."
Haley Landry's advice to the young players to to have fun and work hard, but also not to let things bother you
(Haley Landry):" Try not to mess up and if you do just shake it off and don't take everything to heart."
Fitzpatrick has been the head coach of the team for seven years. Every year the goal it to make it to Bangor, but there are smaller goals to accomplish along the way.
Fitzpatrick:" We have some freshmen coming up and they could see some time. They are quick very athletic and hard workers. Four of them have been playing together for a number of years so they are looking pretty good."
While the team has some veterans returning Fitzpatrick says the younger players could have an early impact on the team's success.
Fitzpatrick:" One game at a time through the season. I look at that as the big picture goal. To me you have to play every game and play hard. Focus on what is in front of you and in the end hopefully that is where you are going to get."
