(WAGM) - A long time coach from the County will be inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.
Billy McAvoy of Stacyville will be honored at an August ceremony in Bangor. McAvoy,a Sherman native, has coached at CAHS, Kathadin and SAHS and has picked up more than 400 wins. As a player McAvoy led his Sherman team to an undefeated season and a Class S State Championship in 1967. His team stopped Strong 63-58 in the State Game. McAvoy then played at Unity College. As a coach McAvoy has been to the Championship game several times and won the Eastern Maine title with Katahdin in 2000.
Also being honored is Dwight Hunter who has been named a Legend of the Hall. Hunter spent 41 years as Athletic Administrator at Caribou High School and served on several Maine Principals Association Committees during his tenure. He was also one of the people instrumental in forming the Big East Conference.
Hunter also was an outstanding High School basketball player for the Presque Isle Wildcats.
