PRESQUE ISLE, Me. (WAGM) - Here. we. go. March Madness has arrived. Well it's kind of like the soft opening of march madness akin to the soft opening of a restaurant. It's starting but only a few teams get to play. There are two play-in games tonight and tomorrow to whet your March madness appetite, but I know what you're all thinking: Matt, who you got? Well patience, patience, I'll tell you.
First and foremost, here are my three most likely upsets for the tournament. Unlike ESPN I don't use fancy statistics and algorithms, I use my instincts.
Ok first up, Murray State over Marquette. This is very popular. Classic five versus twelve. Murray State has something very few upset minded teams posses: a bonafied superstar. Point guard Ja Morant will go top five in the NBA draft and could take the tournament by storm. Marquette's leading scorer is hobbled with a wrist injury and they play in a weak conference. NEXT.
Oregon over Wisconsin. Ride the lightning! Oregon stormed through the Pac-12 tournament en route to securing a bid in the big dance. People forget, this was a top 10 preseason team before future NBA lottery pick Bol Bol was lost for the season. I watched them dismantle Washington in the Pac-12 final. This team is well coached and motivated, and as a result they should beat Wisconsin.
New Mexico State won 30 games during the regular season. Winning is contagious folks. It's like a virus and the aggies got it bad. Auburn lives and dies by the three pointer. I say die. New Mexico State gets the upset. Out of the three upsets I've said, I think New Mexico State and Oregon have the best chance of making it to the sweet sixteen.
Tomorrow, Matt's Madness continues as I lay out my choices for the Elite 8, Final Four, and which team will be cutting down the net in Minneapolis.
