SAHS Warriors Boys Basketball: Under New Leadership

DYER BROOK, Me. (WAGM) - The Southern Aroostook boys basketball team has a new coach this year. Former Stearns coach Greg Marter takes over for longtime coach Billy McAvoy who stepped down at the end of last season. I caught up with Marter at the Hodgdon preseason tournament after just three full practices. He says he is still learning the personel, but he is looking forward to a fun year.

"I have had three days with the kids prior to this scrimmage here," Marter said. "I have been really pleased with the effort and we had some really kids coming out for the team. "

"Right now it is looking good. He has the program going and it is going pretty smooth," Senior captain Jayden Burpee said.

The Warriors return everyone from last years team. At the beginning of last season the team was searching for identity because of their youthfulness and lack of varsity experience. As the year went on they continued to improve.

"Feeling a lot better going into the year. We all have been playing together for a couple of years," Senior forward Garrett Siltz said.

"Everyone is back from last year and that is a good thing. I think we will carry on from what we brought last year," Burpee said.

Marter says that he would love to play an uptempo brand of basketball, but wants to see how his team adjusts to his philosophy of basketball.

The team looked good in the pre-season tournament and that gives them confidence for the season.

"After playing this first preseason game here. We played Woodland they went to the States last year and we held them pretty good," Burpee said. "I think it is going to be an exciting season. I am looking forward to it."

Their goal is to make a deep run in the playoffs.

"That is the ultimate goal to make it to Bangor," Marter said. "Most of these kids have had that experience and they would like to repeat it again this year."
