PRESQUE ISLE, Me. (WAGM) - Look out Portland here come the Snowdogs! 33 of them in fact. 27 players returned this year and there are six new Snowdogs and they'll all get to play in Portland.
"We split those 33 players up into three teams in the tournament in three different divisions," Head Coach Brian Hamel said. "So they all have an opportunity to show what they can do on the basketball court and they've really honed their skills."
Brian Hamel is in his 8th year of coaching the Snowdogs. They go down to Portland every year he's coached, but it wouldn't be possible without the County support.
"We're able to do it because we have such a generous community and it's just really the highlight, a lot of our athletes have not been outside of Aroostook County," Hamel said. "To go to USM to participate is just tremendous, the smiles everywhere, they love to win but they love to compete and enjoy each other while we're there."
Rebekah Taylor is a new Snowdog and she's pumped to go down to Portland.
"I'm very excited, it's so much fun we get to go down to Portland and we get to go bowling and have a pool party it's so much fun," Taylor said.
Phillip Hanson is one of the veterans on the team, he's played for 8 years. He's got two favorite specialties:
"I like doing three pointers, competitive, blocking, basically try to bring home the gold," Hanson said.
Bring home the gold, Phillip! Bring it home. The tournament begins at 9:30 AM at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.
