UMFK Women prepare for USCAA Championship

The five time defending USCAA National Champion University of Maine Fort Kent women's soccer team is in Virginia Beach preparing to defend the title again. The Bengals are the top seed in the event that starts on Thursday.
Larry Simpson):" We are really excited to be going back. Of course it will be new for a bunch of our kids. The experience for them is going to be new, but we have some other kids who had been there last year. We are looking forward to it. I think our chances are good for the players who were there last year and the new players are going to add to it as well."

The 8-3-2 Bengals lost several key players from last years team and are relying on some veterans and several newcomers as they look for another title.

Simpson:" They have come together by necessity. When we went to Georgia and the three games we had down there it took them past being a freshmen and more into a seasoned player. As the season progressed we hit some difficult spots and they matured greatly."

The Bengals will play Cleary University, Bryant and Stratton in the three team event. The two team with the best record will meet in the Championship game.

Simpson:" The teams that are in there everyone of them has a chance to win the Championship. It's basically a semifinal going forward."

The five time defending champions can put a lot of goals on the board, but Simpson says they also relay on defense

Simpson:" Defense is the key last year we went through and didn't give up a goal. If you don't give up goals you can't lose. Our idea is we can score, but we are going to eliminate you from scoring."

This is Simpson's second year as Head Coach and he said he and players are excited to competing for a title again this year.

Simpson:" It's a good experience when we went down there last year the kids enjoyed it. The USCAA puts on a great event .All the way around it is a nice experience."
