ASHLAND, Maine (WAGM) - The Ashland Police Department announced their agency’s selection for a Department of Homeland Security Grant. The grant award of $8,049.00 is designated to assist the Ashland Police with modernizing and improving their communications infrastructure, addressing “dead zones” within their jurisdiction where officers have been unable to reach radio dispatch. The enhanced communications equipment is expected to improve officer safety by ensuring clear radio contact throughout their area of responsibility. The grant also includes funding for reflective traffic safety vests to enhance officer safety during duties performed on public roadways, in compliance with OSHA and Maine Department of Labor regulations.

Ashland Police Chief Christopher Cyr reported steady progress in re-staffing the department this last quarter, amid an ongoing increase in calls for service. Cyr stated, “Considering the limited number of law enforcement officers around the county, staffing our department back to its full complement has been a challenge that we have successfully met, providing around-the-clock coverage for Ashland.” He added, “The transition period rebuilding this small agency has been a busy time for my staff. Our enhanced accessibility to the community is being utilized by the citizenry, and we appreciate the positive comments and concerns being expressed to us.”

Ashland’s Interim Town Manager, Kevin Bushey, noted his satisfaction with the department’s progress. “With the current shortage of deputy sheriffs and state troopers, we have been fortunate to find quality candidates who have accepted positions with us. The department has been handling various investigations and making a meaningful difference in the safety of our residents, and even their pets.”

Several other towns in the county have discontinued their police departments, largely due to challenges in attracting qualified applicants. In prioritizing public safety, Ashland’s Town Council continues to support Chief Cyr’s strategies in community policing and quality-of-life initiatives aimed at enhancing the health and safety of Ashland residents.
