6-month-old abducted by babysitter safely recovered after multistate search, authorities say

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/WLFI/Gray News) - A 6-month-old child abducted from Indiana was safely recovered in Kentucky late Thursday night, according to federal investigators.

Police in West Lafayette, Indiana, were first notified of the possible abduction at Country Villa Apartments shortly before 6 p.m.

Investigators said the suspect, later identified by authorities as 22-year-old Jasmine O’Sullivan, used the name of an uninvolved individual to gain the trust of the baby’s mother in the days prior.

According to police, O’Sullivan was babysitting the child on Thursday. O’Sullivan then left the area with the child.

West Lafayette police learned through a citizen tip that the child and the suspected kidnapper were on a bus traveling to Louisville, Kentucky.

Louisville police, SWAT and specialized task force personnel prepared for the bus’s arrival at a Greyhound station.

The bus arrived in Louisville at around 10:15 p.m. Thursday, and officers safely recovered the child.

O’Sullivan, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was taken into custody and is facing a federal kidnapping charge, according to the FBI.

The child was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital as a precaution and was then reunited with her family.

“The successful resolution of this case is a direct reflection of the professionalism, urgency, and teamwork demonstrated by law enforcement personnel across multiple jurisdictions,” West Lafayette police said.

Police said O’Sullivan could face additional charges as the investigation continues.
